When examining the 250cc legacy of New York's Justin Cooper, there were a multitude of attributes that could be applauded on behalf of the Yamaha rider's arsenal of traits and skills. But arguably one of, if not the, standout characteristic that was embodied, was that of his raw speed and ability to put down a "fast lap" when necessary. For countless events throughout his career, Cooper was a standout athlete that had the ability to portray the quickest time(s) of any competitor...in both 250cc and 450cc classes. And that mantra was carried throughout round seventeen of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship on Saturday as well, where after contending for the lead with Chase Sexton in the earliest stages of his heat race, Cooper was passed by the Illinois native...and seemed to be on a similar trajectory with Hunter Lawrence not far behind. But Cooper somehow advanced his pace to nearly match that of the KTM rider, following him around the track while excelling in every facet. Despite sensing the presence of the Australian, Justin continued to thrive under pressure. Three laps to go, two laps to go, and so on...until the checkered flag was waved, with Cooper claiming the silver medal accolade before departing to the finalé. Once there, the number thirty-two contended for the lead alongside KTM's Chase Sexton. The rider from Illinois was able to make his way by in the early stages and forced Cooper into the runner-up residency. Though as the silver-medal residency was obtained, the New York rider flourished. He was setting some of the fastest laps on the track, and appeared to be on a path to catch the Illinois native at one point. Minute by minute, he continued to toggle the idea of striving for Jett Lawrence at the front of the pack, while also defending the second-place position from Cooper Webb who attempted to approach his rear wheel. Cooper wasn't going to budge, and showcased as to why he was signed to the Star Racing assembly before the season started. At the conclusion of the moto, as he passed through the final run of the whoops and over the double, the showcase that was put forth for the rider from NY was certainly worthy of applause...and the eventual feat of second place in Salt Lake City, was definitely a building block for the rest of the 2024 season!
