JORDON SMITH | GRIT-223 | 250MX
Yamaha's Jordon Smith wanted to attack every segment of this Thunder Valley course with precision as practice began on Saturday morning; where even the most subtle and smallest of rollers would be leapt from with aggression, and the rear wheel constantly rolling as he sped into sections thereafter. This would translate to a first moto sequence, where he passed by the green flag near the position of fourth. With the moisture that the track contained, numerous sections of the circuit were rather deceiving - including the downhill aspects of the course, that were just thereafter the start straightaway. But immediately, the Kawasaki of Ryder DiFrancesco would be an opponent that he had to deal with; where the two riders were swapping lines from inside to outside (and outside to inside as well) in order to attain clear vision and a clear pathway! This was a narrative that carried on for minutes, where constant pivoting and deciphering what was ahead (in the matter of milliseconds) would be paramount if one rider had hoped to break away from the other. Luckily, he would do so after a significant amount of time had passed; launching the largest tunnel/triple jump with a means of whipping the rear wheel to the right, while taking a glance over his left shoulder. It was a race against the clock after he'd established a lead over KTM's Maximus Vohland, knowing that there was little room for error as he maintained the position of sixth. Though ultimately he prevailed, sliding through the final right-handed corner and atop the tabletop takeoff thereafter...exiting the raceway with sixth-place in hand. The second portion of competition wasn't long thereafter, and he would manage to possess a sense of attrition amongst the challenging terrain that couldn't be stopped. Clicking into fourth and fifth gear as he descended from the highest hillside on the track, he would have to be navigating amongst roughly a dozen ruts that began amongst the straightaway, and into the left-handed sweeper that followed! He had been trailing that of teammate Levi Kitchen, and mimicked the Washington native to the best of his ability as they approached lap five. Though unable to move around the opponent, the pace in which he generated was unmatched by those from twelfth and behind - which gave him the necessary cushion to be solidified in sixth as the timer neared zero. Fatigue had began to set in, but he wasn't going to fold amongst this challenging Colorado terrain. And as he fed off the crowd's energy en route to the final valley and uphill, despite being passed by a few opponents, he managed to corral sixth as the final flag waved - just ahead of RJ Hampshire, en route to seventh overall on the day, respectively.
