Knowing what had to be done in order to solidify his claim for the championship, Jett Lawrence welcomed the rather laid back atmosphere of Nashville upon arrival to the city...but was all business once engaged for practice where he immediately forced his presence onto the entirety of the opposition. This set the stage for heat two, where he was up against a myriad of championship rivals, including Cooper Webb. But Lawrence was able to stay composed, and immediately dash to the front of the pack. With Webb right behind him, he led the first full lap of competition while accepting the pressure that the North Carolina native presented. He was fierce, yet poised when toggling between combinations in the whoops - seeing where Cooper was gaining on him, and adjusting his lines as needed. Through the halfway point, the gap that he had created over the Yamaha rider was notable, but he couldn't let off the throttle even with the checkered flag around the corner. His sense of attrition generated applause from the crowd, and as Lawrence eventually jumped the final double en route to a moto victory, he had proven that he was set to battle in the main event as well. From the moment the gate(s) crashed, the Australian athlete was in the running for an overall win...though Ken Roczen, immediately surged forward and passed Lawrence (who was second) in the corner after the finish. Lawrence wasn't rattled though, and remained steady in third, while Eli Tomac proceeded to display blistering speed at the front of the field. But Ken Roczen's bike, unfortunately malfunctioned after a few laps - going up in smoke, which enabled Lawrence to move to second. And then, around the halfway point, Lawrence had lessened the distance between he and the Colorado native...ultimately making the pass on Eli with a quick-witted move to the inside, in the concluding bend of the sand! Two downed riders had forced Eli to the outside of the yellow flag incident, and the small window of opportunity was all that Lawrence needed to inherit the first-place ride. Though a near devastating, miscalculation had almost occurred in the rhythm lane near the mechanics area...yet luckily Lawrence remained upright and in control of the motorcycle. From that point forward, nothing could stand in the way of the Australian - leading through the checkered flag, to extend the points gap between he and Cooper Webb!
