Presenting his patented charging style throughout qualification rounds, Eli Tomac's poise and demeanor when staged aboard the starting grid was one of a business-like mindset. Though his jump from the grate was less than desired amongst this pack of elite contenders, with the Colorado native forced to surge forward from eighth-place on the score sheet. Into sixth by the third lap, the process of minimizing the distance between he and Chase Sexton was crucial...but while doing that, he would pass Jason Anderson who was fading ever so slightly. And in the final moments of the round, Cooper Webb's collision with Cade Clason would allow Tomac to move forward into the fourth-place standing. Remaining here as he closed-in on the rear wheel of the Illinois native, the fourth-place score was enough to keep Tomac in contention for a notable overall run at the night's conclusion. The eleventh-place registry on the first full lap of action (in moto-two) wasn't necessarily optimal for the former champion...but he proceeded to fight forward and dig, with all of his might. Taking seventh by the third lap, he was on a paralleled paced with that of Chase Sexton...passing Malcolm Stewart, Justin Cooper, and Hunter Lawrence in the meantime. However the number one (i.e. Sexton) was on a stellar trajectory of his own, leaving Jason Anderson (who was slowly beginning to lapse in speed) now in front of Tomac as the eleventh circuit came to fruition. He couldn't seem to get around the number twenty-one, however, falling into a lull of sorts as the leaders continuously sped away. He still managed to generate tremendous applause however, and as "ET3" crested the line in seventh, the veteran of the sport still sought to give it his all in the final moto of the weekend. A tenth-place start again, wasn't what was visualized for the start of the sport...as he and Malcolm Stewart would fight for a ninth-place position before Eli appeared to have made a mistake on the fifth circuit. His lap-time faltered, and the slight miscue was enough for Hunter Lawrence and Shane McElrath to work their way around...though Eli eventually returned fire, and provided an array of speedy tactics to acquire tenth by lap thirteen. With Aaron Plessinger's mistake, and Malcolm Stewart not too far ahead, Eli was constantly striving for a higher placement in the rankings...but it was to no avail. Ultimately tenth, the extremely talented racer from Colorado would look forward to the eleventh stop on the tour as a place to garner victory - believing that he could accelerate, from the seventh-place overall score that was sustained in Indianapolis.
