ELI TOMAC - GRIT 239 450SX

GRIT-239 | 450 SX

With the championship in mind, Eli Tomac knew that the round of Detroit was critical. The gap between the competitors of the series was minimal, and "ET3's" championship pedigree was one that had gained points in urgent times, which was a standout attribute amongst the greats in the sport. Therefore after showcasing a solid effort in qualification, the Colorado native seemed to shift into gear and attempt to pass as many riders as possible to begin the opening heat. His opening standing (of fourteenth) wasn't one of high regard, and rather uncharacteristic...though Tomac couldn't be counted out as he sped into the top nine by the third lap. Into sixth by lap five, he had passed Cooper Webb and now began to the likes of Dylan Ferrandis while seeking a stronger gate position. A definitive pass would be made on the ninth lap, but in the meantime, Webb too had now moved forward, which seemingly omitted the run that was generated by the Colorado native. This put Tomac to sixth as the ten-lap race concluded, but with the late race charge he presented to the former KTM athlete, those in the crowd knew that at the number three was on the correct trajectory. His start to the finalé was tremendous, just behind that of Chase Sexton and Jett Lawrence; creating a narrative of championship contenders to combat one another as the halfway point was clawed toward. However before the seventh lap was completed, Ken Roczen would make a remarkable move on Eli as the German rider swept to the outside of the preceding finish line left-handed bend. Now fourth, Tomac didn't necessarily begin to "descend" at that point, but mistakes would be made and the stamina of the number three appeared to diminish rather quickly. Ferrandis was the next to make a move in the corner after the finish line, as roughly twelve minutes were now remaining on the clock...the end of the moto couldn't have appeared further away. As the laps progressed though, the former champion appeared rather compromised; allowing opponents to make their way by in the sweeping left-handed bend near the mechanics area, and rolling through many lanes with mediocre momentum. Though returning from injury, and able to fight back in the closing moments of the moto, Eli's ability to garner tenth wasn't ideal; but still a commendable effort, when viewing his recent racing history in a less magnified view, knowing that one of the greatest riders on the circuit will be back for redemption next week.
