COOPER WEBB | GRIT-213 | SX 450
Never one to be discredited nor counted out, Cooper Webb would showcase his championship pedigree while racing around the track in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday. The KTM rider would remind the industry as to why he's considered one of the best in the sport, steadily inching his way toward claiming the championship following the series finalé. Vowing to take it one race at a time, however, Webb would put the entirety of his focus into mastering the track at Ford Field; which would be displayed in qualification, as he qualified sixth into the night show. He seemed to be firing on all cylinders as the gate fell for his heat race, doing his best to put all in the field behind him; however a dismal first-turn sequences would have him battling for ninth as the green flag was thrown. Though known to leave quite the "reserve" in the tank for various heat races, there was no shortage of effort presented by Webb as he weaved through a pack of unusual contenders. Grant Harlan, and Kevin Moranz were just two of the combatants in front of him; and with Webb's knowledge of how the track would break down, the passes seemed to occur more often as time would progress. Seventh, into sixth, and then fifth, would leave for a fourth-place residency up for grabs as Jason Anderon led the field around on the last lap. And with Webb's resilience, the fourth-place position would be clenched as the main event roster was assembled shortly thereafter. For the finalé, Cooper began the quest in third, knowing that he could run with competitor on the roster amongst this technical Ford Field track. He would quickly move around Adam Cianciarulo, doing his best to replicate his teammate Aaron Plessinger; though the Ohio native was in a league of his own, for the majority of the main event. Webb would then have to deal with Eli Tomac, who would slingshot by him in the opening straightaway of the "switchback sequence," as just under five minutes had transpired. The Yamaha rider nullified his trajectory in the accompanying right and left-handed corner(s), but Webb was determined to strike back as quickly as possible. And that's exactly what he conducted, via a superb dive to the inside with roughly fourteen minutes left on the lock; leaping to the right of Eli on the step-on/step-off sequence while forcing the number one to slam on the brakes! Now second, Webb would be passed by Barcia in the following moments, as they returned to the dragon's back just a minute later! Though shifted to third, Webb would remain on the podium until just after the nine-minute mark; where Chase Sexton leapt to the inside (before the final rhythm section on the layout), pushing the number two the outer tuff-blocks! Merely sixty-seconds later, Webb then exhibited the same move to Justin Barcia (for third) who was beginning to fade...and Cooper now seemed on a prominent flow that was equivalent to a podium score. He remained here from that moment forward, staying within a respectable distance of Chase Sexton's rear wheel while they both tracked down Aaron Plessinger. But as the narrative was set to conclude, it would actually be Webb who obtained second when Aaron Plessinger unfortunately crashed to the ground; moving a number of riders forward as the checkered flag would wave, with Webb capturing silver in Detroit.
