The atmosphere was electric for the round of racing in Southwick on Saturday, with fans pouring into the facility for the initiation of practice. One of the standout performers, was none other than the rookie, Casey Cochran, who was exceptional when surging forward from outside to outside, among the endless berms that lined the tracks perimeter. Scrubbing his way over the steepest of anthills, his vision when analyzing the track some fifty yards ahead was paramount, when viewing his overall lap-times...and led to direct transferring bid for the first moto that followed - where he shifted into gear as the thirty-second board went sideways. Those valuable milliseconds when leaping from the grate(s), were crucial - and impacted his position with the chaos of the first corner, as sand would mar his vision. Appearing to occupy a standing near thirteenth in the opening laps, it was crucial that he established a pace that could be sustained for thirty minutes. He had to be cognizant of weight distribution aboard his Husqvarna machine, where too much force to the front-end would result in a wash-out or subsequent crash...therefore his adjustments were crucial (i.e. moving to the rear fender) when storming to the halfway point. His heart-rate had definitely spiked, and the longest straightaway just before the finish line had now become littered with braking bumps...nevertheless, he continue to strive - occupying the position of eleventh (behind Ryder DiFrancesco) with only a small bit of time remaining. Though the engine revving of Jett Reynolds and Daxton Bennick were constant when sweeping through the heavily wooded area, he managed to nullify any sense of doubt while eventually obtaining eleventh in the record book. For moto two, the anticipation of speed for athletes like Haiden Deegan and Tom Vialle, were nearly a given when drawing a consensus from the crowd on the side-line. However, he wasn't going to let any foe combat or disregard his speed when flying over the tunnel jump just after the mechanic's area...landing amid the first seven laps with a harsh "thud" before sweeping into the uphill left-handed bend thereafter. Weaving and dodging through the sharpest of edges as if they were land-mines, he continuously solved this riddle of a track, while at the height of fourth gear! Through the twenty-minute mark, he appeared rather solidified in a standing near the top-ten...while on a similar trajectory to that of California's Ryder DiFrancesco. The GasGas rider was just ahead of him, and even after the red-flag restart which had occurred at the initial stages of the moto, Cochran somehow had energy left in the tank - and would pass the number thirty-four, just before the checkered flag, to claim tenth in the final standings as all eventually concluded...earning a tenth-place overall (as well) for this phenomenal run in Massachusetts for the rookie!
