The Ohio native appeared to embody the applause from the crowd on Saturday, and elevate his riding to the highest of level(s) as fans roared on behalf of the number seven machine. Everything about this event played into the current persona of KTM's Aaron Plessinger, and the former 250cc champion accelerated alongside the most elite of competition throughout practice, too. His momentum was sustained for the first moto, where Plessinger sped through the opening lap to gather a standing of second before moving into the forthcoming circuits with authority. He was scrubbing the finish-line tabletop and powering into the first turn area with immense traction beneath his KTM wheel-set, all the while distancing his machine from opponents who followed. Leaping from the ski jump and into the pro section, he was monitoring the charge of Chase Sexton who trailed, while also striving for the rear fender of Hunter Lawrence, who was only seconds ahead. This assembly of cat and mouse per se, was maintained for a significant amount of time...before Sexton would overtake Plessinger on the fifth lap. He strove to latch onto his teammate for as long as possible, monitoring the lines of the Illinois native while also being pursued by Yamaha's Justin Cooper. Cooper eventually saw an opportunity near LaRocco's leap to overtake Plessinger, and when entering into the finish line area of the tenth circuit, would do so - which forced "AP" into the fourth-place category, with only a few laps of competition remaining. During that period, Plessinger wouldn't falter, however, and raced to the checkered flag among the roar from the crowd...to earn fourth before exiting the raceway. Plessinger's transition into moto-two was applaud worthy, and the KTM athlete was incredible in every facet of the track as it became rougher. He would attempt to manual through the rollers, though the mounds of sand had now evolved into a makeshift rhythm section! His initial residency (around sixth place) was immediately improved upon, where he began to chip away, and surpassed Justin Cooper before taking the green flag. Now fifth, he then surpassed Malcolm Stewart on the next lap - and Kyle Webster, on the circuit that followed! He was relentless while making his way to podium territory, and believed that he could overtake Jason Anderson if enough pressure was applied. And then, on the sixth circuit, Plessinger would move past the New Mexico native - remaining incredible through the rutted corners, despite battling an illness which certainly created a bit of fatigue. Even with being sick, Plessinger remained engaged, and countered a late-race charge by both, Anderson and Lawrence in the final stages...to earn second for this moto, and a silver medal feat atop the final podium as well!
