Marco Showed up to Lorettas determined to win, with a moto score of 1-3-4 Cannella was cowned the national champion of the Schoolboy 1 class at the 2015 Loretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Championship. We caught up with the Canadian athlete to see what he's been up to lately and what his plans are for the rest of the year.
MP: Winning a championship at the Ranch is no easy task and takes a lot of work. Talk about your training regimen and what you do to prepare yourself to win.
Marco Cannella: 2 this summer was the first year we starting training at Motopark with the MPA crew and I really enjoyed that and had a blast there. We spent about three weeks there this summer and it just makes it easier to get the work done with a good motivated group of kids that are always pushing each other trying to take there fitness and riding ability to the next level. Also during the winter for the past four years we have been doing the MCR training camp with Matt and Joey crown and a few other kids for 5 weeks and that has taken place at Gpf twice and Boswick mx twice and that has defently been a key part to my success and wear I am at today. Every time after those 5 weeks I come back a better and fitter rider.
MP: Let's talk about Lorettas. you captured the title in Schoolboy 1, how does it feel to see your hard work paying off?
Marco Cannella:. This year to be able to have left Loretta's a national champion really means the world to me. Going there this year my best finish was a 9th overall and 10th in a moto so when I got that first moto win it was the best feeling of my life it was like nothing else matterd I was just living in the moment and the joy of winning a moto at the biggest amateur national in the world. Then 2 races later to be crowned the schoolboy 1 national champion was just amazing especially making the pace for the overall win on the last lap of moto 3 was definitely an adrenaline rush and walking on that podium, receiving the number one plate felt like I was in a dream, it's hard to even describe in words how amazing that feeling was. And for all those hours in the gym and training to have payed off was amazing and worth ever second of it.
MP: Give us a recap on how your week went while at Lorettas.
Marco Cannella: My week at Loretta's was defently awesome. Every time I went on the track I just tried to be positive and have fun and try and find a flow and I think that helped me a lot no matter what the track was like I would try and find the positives out there. Also my neighbour and good friend justin came with us and we had a blast the whole week from floating down the creek and doing the rope swing or watching the pw-50s battle on the track it's always a great time and I look forward to it every year .
MP: What's your plans for the rest of this year?
Marco Cannella: Well right now we are getting ready to race our Canadian amateur national at
Walton transcan for the next week then gonna get ready for the Baja brawl and mabe soaring eagle then hopefully go down south and do some training to get ready for the mini Os. I've never been and I heard it's a great event so hopefully wee make it down there to race this winter would be awesome.
MP: How did you first get started in this sport of racing dirt bikes?
Marco Cannela: My dad used to have a bike and he rode once and a while never to serious or anything just for fun he did a few races and when I was almost three my parents took me to watch a race at gopher dunes and I absolutely loved it and wouldn't stop bugging my parents to get me a bike so for my 3rd birthday they got me a pw-50 and we put training wheels on it and I rode that for a while then eventually those came off and I started riding at some local tracks and we joined the steel city racers club and did my first race at the local club track Oshweken and I've just been hooked ever since always trying to improve and Become a better rider and a better athlete and just having fun at the track spending time with my family and friends and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Marco Cannella: I have rode allot of amazing tracks in my life like monster mountain or Gpf and Boswick mx but I think out of all of them the funniest track I have ever rode is WW ranch. That track just flows so well and I have a blast everytime I ride there with all those huge table tops and everything.
MP: If you could describe yourself using one word, what would it be?
Marco Cannella: Hard working.
MP: Finally, who would you like to thank for helping you out?
Marco Cannella: First of all I'd like to thank my mom and dad because without all there support I wouldn't be able to even do this support, also Lain Hayden, Yamaha Canada, Motopark and the whole MPA crew, Matt crown, MCR suspension and training, Orthoflex, gamma sales, Fly, Dragon, Atlas, Rynopower, and F
