In 2015 Will Canaguier stood on the podium at Loretta’s as the 4-6 50CC National Champion. He smiled, held up a shield that weighed more than he did at the time and I specifically remember seeing the sparkle in his eye on that day. This kid had the spirit of a Tiger on the track even at such an early age. The sparkle is still there in this moment as Will is facing the biggest competition he will ever fight. When Will is riding you can’t see the demon in his body, but cancer has stopped him in his tracks. He was approved to ride at Mini O’s after missing out on Ponca due to his diagnosis. I was able to chat with him since Mini O’s and find out how he’s not only coping, but how he’s chomping at the bit to get back to the track after treatment. Here's what Will had to say.
Tell me about your 2017 accomplishments in motocross Will…
I Retired from the 50cc class on my Cobra finishing 3rd overall at Loretta Lynn's this season. I also finished 5th in the 65 7-9 for my first year. At Mini O's I finished 3rd in SX 65 7-9, and had top 10 finishes in MX.
How did you feel to be riding at Mini O's?
It was amazing, and I was so blessed to be able to race Mini O's this year. I found out the Tuesday before Mini O's that I could race. Although I had not been on my bike for over 5 weeks I wanted to go. So, we packed up our small bike trailer and hit the highway. When riding at Mini O’s everything felt “normal” again. I feel free on my dirt bike. I enjoyed being at the track will of my moto-family.
I was so happy to be able to race before all my treatments.
How are the treatments going?
I was diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer called a medulloepithelioma. 1 of every 4.5 Million people get this type of cancer and it’s rare in children. My parents researched and found a doctor in NYC who treats this kind of cancer. I completed a 7-day radiation therapy treatment on December 6, 2017. I am currently healing and feeling better every day. We will not find out if the radiation was able to destroy the cancer for 3 months.
I do get to return to school after Christmas break and if my vision clears up I’m going to able to start riding again. My plan is to get ready for the Qualifiers. I want to be on the podium at the ranch again this year and I am willing to work for that goal.
Who’s the person you look up to the most?
My Mentor and person I look up to is my Dad, He is my main trainer, he raced at the pro level back in the day. He is a great trainer and rider.
Are you in school full time or home schooling?
I am in 4th grade at Susquenita Elementary School. I am a straight A student, I love to read, and I love Math.
If people were to describe you in one word what would it be?
FAST! a lot of people call me fast Will
What can we expect in 2018 from Fast Will?
I am planning on riding and competing in 2018. I pray every day for my vision to come back and for my eye to get stronger.
