Families across the nation plan their barbeques and dinner parties on a weekly basis. The Tucker family from Dubuque Illinois is busy planning their winter training schedule to ensure both their sons, Leo and William both make it to the ranch this season. It’s takes a lot of family planning to escape the freezing tundra of Illinois to frequently head south, but the Tucker’s have it all mapped out. I was able to chat with William during the weekly events at the Thor Winter Olympics to find out how he felt about the 2017 season and see what he’s got planned heading into the 2018 season. Here’s what he had to say.
How’d you get involved in motocross?
My dad raced motocross when he was younger, so I was always interested in the sport. Santa brought me a PW 50 the Christmas of 2008 when I was just 2 ½ years-old. I started riding the following Spring. I really didn’t ride regularly though until I was 7 years-old. I only raced three races at 7 then started racing regularly when I turned 8.
Tell us about your mini o’s experience?
This was my second year of competing in this event. I had a goal of placing in the top-10 in at least one of my 65cc classes. I achieved that goal by finishing 8th place in the 65cc 10-11 Limited class on the MX side. Overall, I was pretty happy with my results in my other classes on both MX and SX. I finished top-15 in all of my primary 65cc classes with the exception of one on the SX side where I just had a bad start and just didn’t push hard enough. This was my first big race on my new Babbitt’s Team Green Kawasaki KX 85. I pulled the hole shot in my first race on it. I ended up not having a very good main due to a mechanical issue, but all in all, it was a really good Mini O’s for me.
What was your favorite race in 2017?
Mini O’s was my favorite race. The competition was great! I love seeing all of my friends and making new ones also. This was my first top-10 finish at a national event.
What race will you make sure to not miss in 2018?
Loretta Lynn’s. This year I had some issues at the regional and opted not to race. I attended Loretta’s for the first time this year in support of my younger brother, William. It was very difficult to watch all of the other kids racing in my classes. It was then that I said to myself that I will be racing here in 2018!
Plans and goals for winter training?
Our plans involve some Texas and Florida riding and racing. Not 100% sure on which specific events yet, but we will likely park our rig in Florida and fly back and forth. For my winter training I will be training some with Brad Jerominski at Club 57 as well as Keir Sexton.
Are you still in school full time or are you enrolled in home school?
I am in school full-time at this point. I attend East Dubuque (IL) Elementary School. I am very fortunate that my school is flexible when it comes to me taking time off. They always get me the work that needs to be done ahead of time when I am going to be on the road. I like my teachers and friends that I have at my school. I am very proud of getting straight-A’s in school! I have to work extra-hard!

Anyone you’d like to thank for helping you in the sport? Sponsors…
I have the best sponsors and people supporting me. First of all, I’d like to thank my parents. I couldn’t do any of this without them and their support. My brothers and my grandparents are also a big part of my support system. I’d also like to thank Team Babbitt’s and Babbitt’s Online for hooking us up with Team Green Kawasaki and the best bikes out there. O’Neal for hooking me up with the coolest gear at the track. SSI Decals for getting me the sickest graphics ever!
